Night of Astral Jazz with Mukang Fields
Manzi is pleased to host a night of astral jazz by Mukang Fields – a ‘space jazz’ trio combining analog and digital synthesizer, drum machine, conga, tenor sax and MoogSub37 synth to create a unique space-based groove to satisfy those looking for anything from shoegaze to funk.
By combining analog, digital and organic sounds, the trio create a final sound that is more than the sum of its parts, bridging cutting edge technology with sound musical science.

Screening of the “Before” Trilogy: Before Sunrise
Romance has always been the most favorite movie genre of the majority of the cinema audience. Of the countless romance films that have been produced all over the world in the last 100 years, the “Before” trilogy directed by Richard Linklater – consisting of Before Sunrise (1995), Before Sunset (2004) and Before Midnight (2013) is probably the finest and most well-known trilogy of the romance genre till date.
Each part of the trilogy will be presented on one Friday night this month at TPD.
Before Sunrise is a 1995 American romantic drama film directed by Richard Linklater and written by Linklater and Kim Krizan. The film follows Jesse (Ethan Hawke), a young American man, and Céline (Julie Delpy), a young French woman, who meet on a train and disembark in Vienna, where they spend the night walking around the city and getting to know each other.
The plot is considered minimalistic, as not much happens aside from walking and talking. The two characters’ ideas and perspectives on life and love are detailed. Jesse is a romantic disguised as a cynic, and Céline is seemingly a romantic, albeit with some doubts. Taking place over the course of one night, their limited time together is always on their minds, and leads to their revealing more about themselves than they normally would, since both believe they will never see one another again.
Before Sunrise opened to a strongly positive reception from critics. Jesse and Céline later make an appearance in Linklater’s 2001 film Waking Life. A 2004 sequel, Before Sunset, picks up the story nine years after the events of the first film, and a 2013 sequel, Before Midnight, picks up the story eighteen years on.

French Jazz Night with Vintage Jazz Group
Using music to connect cultures, Vintage Jazz group unites the familiar faces in the music scene of Hanoi: Ha Dinh Huy (drums & percussion), Doan Viet Dung (guitar), Hoang Hai Bang (guitar bass & contrabass) and Vu Tu Cau (piano) will collaborate with guest artists Quyen Thien Dac (saxophone), Nguyen Duc Minh (guimbarde & flûtes) and Amine Canamine (singer, guembri-musician) from Morocco in the vintage French jazz night at L’Espace. With a peculiar production, this French jazz night is expected to bring a unique experience – a musical fusion of French romance and African fiery – to audiences.

Art Exhibition No. 5
In September, with the coming of autumn to Ha Noi, the exhibition at the Old Quarter center presents to us a harmonious quintette of the five talented artists Hoang Hai Anh, Tran Cong Dung, Hoang Duc Dung, Trinh Vu Hieu and Le Anh Quan, with different styles, materials and subjects. It is there waiting for further aesthetic dialogues with the audience in order to reach the final stage of artworks’ life: being absorbed into the soul of art-lovers.
Through the warm lines of Hoang Hai Anh’s drawings, the expressive still life paintings or blushing figures of female images, the artworks engage the audience with the calmness of the characters. Though the modern life might be too busy and hectic, when we stand in front of such paintings, in a moment, our emotions will be stirring strongly as if we could touch the happiness and sadness of life – the shared feelings of all human beings.
The rusted doors of the Old Quarter’s houses in a series of lacquer paintings by Artist Tran Cong Dung, which have been done just recently, on a different note, evokes the memories of “the war and peace of Ha Noi” in those who have experienced them. Life keeps changing, but fortunately, thanks to the talent of artists, the people of Old Quarter may feel comforted that whatever lies ahead, even when new houses replace old ones, the soul of the city remains in such enduring doorframes which hazily convey the beauty of time.
