Hoa Ban Festival to develop Dien Bien's unique tourism product

2016 Hoa Ban Festival officially kicked off in Dien Bien city in the northwestern province of Dien Bien on March 13 with a ceremony to announce that Dien Bien Phu - Pa Khoang is to become the National Tourism Centre of the northwestern region.

The festival is co-chaired by the Northwest Steering Committee, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, relevant agencies and People's Committee of the northwestern province of Dien Bien.
Thousands of local residents from 19 ethnic groups, and tourists nationwide gathered to the world-famous Dien Bien Phu valley to attend the opening ceremony.
Named after the most beautiful flower in the region, hoa ban, or the orchid trees, the festival resembles the ethnic Thai groups in Dien Bien province.

The festival was also be attended by HCM City, capital of Hanoi and eight northwestern provinces encompassing Lao Cai, Yen Bai, Phu Tho, Hoa Binh, Son La, Dien Bien, Lai Chau, and Ha Giang.
The 3rd Hoa Ban Festival will include a trade fair, an orchid show at the city’s square.
A friendly mini football cup between provincial departments, traditional games played between some districts of Dien Bien and others in Laos and Thailand, a photo exhibition and a book show will also be organised during the festival.
The highlights of the 2016 Hoa Ban Festival will be a workshop on developing tourism products in the province, a cooking contest and a street culture parade.
Ban flower, scientifically known as Bauhinia Variegata, is typical to the northern mountainous region of Vietnam, often in blossom in spring.

The annual Ban Flower Festival was first organised in 2014.
The 3rd Hoa Ban Festival was held to celebrate the major holidays of the country and Dien Bien province. The festival aims to honour, preserve, promote and develop the typical and individual cultural heritage forms of peoples in the northwest in general and Dien Bien province in particular.
Dien Bien province expects the event will help to further strengthen solidarity, friendship and close cooperation in economic and tourism development between the locality with other provinces and cities nationwide as well as neigbours from northern Laos and northeastern Thailand.
The festival is expected to be a premise to develop Dien Bien's unique tourism brand, gradually bringing the province to become a key tourist destination of the country in the coming years.
