In’l NGOs support VN’s landmine clearance

Thirty-three international NGOs are helping Viet Nam overcome wartime consequences.

Participants in the third international conference on cooperation between Viet Nam and international Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) in Ha Noi on November 28-29, said that about 6.5 million ha of land in Viet Nam are still contaminated with unexploded ordnance (UXO) /landmines. The country needs VND185 trillion to clean up the explosives left over from the war.
 
However, those organizations have not yet met the need. At the conference, all viewpoints focused on enhancing cooperation in the work of landmine remedial between foreign and local NGOs, governments at all levels.
 
They said the distribution and use of assistance should ensure the urgency and the need of localities, and more efforts should be made to call for cooperation and support from foreign individuals and organizations in the post-war remedial work.
 
They proposed strengthening cooperation between NGOs and administrative committees in the coming time and increasing activities to improve people's awareness of this matter.
