The Vietnam National Petroleum Corporation (PetroVietnam) held a ceremony in the southern province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau on December 13 to launch Tam Dao 05 offshore oilrig, the largest ever made-in-Vietnam jack-up rig.
Deputy Prime Minister (PM) Hoang Trung Hai attended the ceremony.
Invested by the Vietnam-Russia Oil and Gas Joint Venture (Vietsovpetro) and manufactured by PetroVietnam Marine Shipyard JSC (PV Shipyard), the oilrig features the JU-2000E model of the American Friede & Goldman Ltd.
Addressing the event, the Deputy PM appreciated the significant development of the oil mechanical manufacturing industry, contributing to serve the exploration and exploitation of oil and gas, and marine economic development.
The successful jack-up rig manufacturing of Tam Dao 03 and Tam Dao 05 is the proud milestone, marking a significant progress of Vietnam’s capacity in manufacturing oilrigs, Deputy PM Hai said.
With the rate of local content reaching nearly 50%, the project initially created the basis to help building a system of auxiliary industries for marine mechanical and shipbuilding industry - one of the key factors to implement successfully the strategic development of marine economy, he stated.
Deputy PM Hai suggested PetroVietnam continue to increase investment, improve strengths and competitiveness in order to gain the domestic market for the services which are capable of effective supports for oil exploration and exploitation.
He proposed PV Shipyard and the domestic oil manufacturing mechanics sector expand their reach to foreign markets.
The 120-metre jack-up rig has the total investment capital of 230 million USD, weighs almost 18,000 tonnes and can drill to a depth of 9 kilometres.
The rig measures 70.4 metres in length, 76.2 metres in width and 9.4 metres in height and can withstand storms of above level 12.
After the launch, the remaining items of the construction are expected to be finished in August, 2016 before being handed over to the owner.
PV Shipyard also built the first made-in-Vietnam jack-up rig, Tam Dao 03, weighing nearly 12,000 tonnes. The platform, including a helicopter deck, can drill as deep as 6 kilometres.
