Nearly US$26,3 billion invested in producing high-quality catfish in Mekong Delta

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has issued the project on producing high-quality catfish species in the Mekong Delta.

The project aims to contribute to the development of the catfish industry in a sustainable manner to meet the requirements of national and international market.

Accordingly, by 2020, the three-level catfish fingerling production chain meets 50% of the demand for high-quality catfish in the Mekong Delta. The demand for the whole region is 2.2-2.5 billion of catfish species. By 2050, providing 100% high-quality catfish species.

The project will build up a chain of catfish production in the Mekong Delta, focusing on An Giang, Dong Thap and other provinces in the Mekong Delta. The concentrated area for catfish species must be in line with the local land use planning, with an area of ​​50 hectares or more, which shall be convenient for water sources and environment in accordance with regulations.

At present, the status of catfish species scarcely cause difficulties for the industry. According to the Research Institute for Aquaculture No. 2, there are 101,000 catfish species that have been distributed to hatcheries in the Mekong Delta in the age of 6-7. 

In 2017, it will distribute 15,000 pups and will breed in 2019. However, broodstock source for this year's production is only 60,000 catfish species.
