New Zealand adjusts visa policy in favor of foreign students
Vietnam is a crucial market for New Zealand education institutions.
The New Zealand government has launched a new international education strategy, and enhanced post-study work rights that will strengthen career opportunities for international students.
A new three-year post-study open work visa for bachelor-level and post-graduate students will provide a streamlined path for these international students to pursue post-study work opportunities in New Zealand.
For ambitious international students, New Zealand offers a compelling package, said Education New Zealand Chief Executive Grant McPherson.
“We want international students coming to New Zealand to be motivated by a great education and a great experience. Generous post-study pathways to residence remain available for those with the skills and qualifications New Zealand needs,” Mr McPherson said.
The changes support a newly launched International Education Strategy 2018-2030, strengthening New Zealand’s position as a world-leading international education destination.
“The International Education Strategy has three goals: delivering an excellent education and student experience; achieving sustainable growth; and developing global citizens.
“It’s grounded in a high performing, sustainable education system that equips students with the skills needed to meet the challenges of the 21st century,” said Mr McPherson.
There were more than 2,500 Vietnamese students in New Zealand at the end of 2017, with the number of secondary school students increasing by 36% compared to 2016, while university student numbers also grew by 14%.
The number of Vietnamese students pursuing a bachelor degree at universities in New Zealand puts it among the top 3 of all Southeast Asian countries, said Education New Zealand at a press conference on July 26.
