North Korea - US summit proves diplomatic success for Hanoi: Journalist

The event took place at the time Hanoi is marking the 20th anniversary of being recognized as City for Peace by the UNESCO, as such, Hanoi has also expressed strong desire for peace by hosting the summit.

US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, despite their differences towards an ultimate agreement that all parties had desired, have all appreciated Vietnam’s essential role in hosting the event, considering it a diplomatic success for the latter, according to Ho Quang Loi, standing vice chairman of the Vietnam Journalists’ Association.

The summit, albeit an unexpected result, has no doubt improved ties between the US and North Korea, placing much promises for the future ahead.

From different perspective, international observers agreed that there were five reasons behind Vietnam being selected as the host for such event of global importance.

Firstly, Vietnam has organized successfully regional and international events in the past, showcasing the country’s capability of ensuring security, logistics and technical aspects for hosting a summit at high level of complexity and sensitivity, due to the difficult nature in US – North Korea relation.

Secondly, Vietnam has  good relations with both the US and North Korea.

Thirdly, Vietnam is growing rapidly and has emerged as a dynamic country with successful transition from a centrally planned economy to a market-based economy.

Fourthly, Vietnam is pursuing a foreign policy of independence, self-reliance, peace, cooperation and development, with diversification and multilateralization of international relations.

Fifthly, Vietnam has been extensively integrated in global integration, contributing positively to joint-efforts towards global peace and stability.

The North Korea – US summit has been an inspirational event, which has been partly spurred by Vietnam as a country of peace, cooperation and development. Over the course of history, Vietnam has overcome a difficult past towards a bright future, and now is playing a part in shaping world peace, according to Loi.

Moreover, Vietnam has left its mark in the history through this event, in turn enhancing the country’s status and image in the global stage. The summit has proved that Vietnam with its unique strategic value could make the world a better place for the future, the journalist official said.

Vietnam has been steadfast on the policy of befriending with all countries in the world, proof of which is the relation with the US, from a former foe to Vietnam’s strategic partner, while Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov also highly regarded Vietnam’s role in the event.

It is worth mentioning that the event took place at the time Hanoi is marking the 20th anniversary of being recognized as City for Peace by the UNESCO, as such, Hanoi has also expressed strong desire for peace by hosting the summit.

The North Korea – US summit presented a valuable opportunity for Vietnam to cement its growing role in the world, especially the country is the sole Asian candidate for non-permanent UN Security Council seat and will take over the chair of the ASEAN bloc by 2020.

The chance is equally huge for Vietnam in terms of economic development, as the country is seen as an attractive investment destination and one of the world’s top 10 most attractive tourist spots. Vietnam, therefore, must step up and take this opportunity.
