Over 22 million students nationwide start new school year 2016-2017

A ceremony to open the 2016-2017 academic year was held in schools nationwide at 7:30 am on September 5.

More than 22 million students across the country attended the opening ceremony of the 2016-2017 academic year.

According to the guidelines of the Ministry of Education and Training, the opening ceremony was organised in the joyful atmosphere of the festival.
The event takes place activities that are held briefly and solemnly, including the flag ceremony, singing of the National Anthem and  reading a letter sent from the State President.
Besides, the opening ceremony also include an array of healthy and impressive activities with the aims to creating the first day of school to be a sacred and important event for all students, especially those go to school for the first time.

Speaking at the event, President Tran Dai Quang asserted that in the 2015-2016 academic year, the education sector implemented many educational reforming efforts and achieved a lot of positive results.
In the same day, National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan participated in the opening ceremony of the new school year  with teachers and students of Le Quy Don High School for the Gifted in Vung Tau City.

Hanoi Party Secretary Hoang Trung Hai attended the ceremony at Ba Vi boarding secondary school. In the 2016-2017 academic year, the school welcomed 107 students in grades 6 and 138 students in grades 10 from 14 districts in the city.

According to Hanoi Department of Education and Training, in the 2016-2017 academic year, the city has more than 2,600 schools and educational institutions with more than 1.7 million students from kindergarten to high school.
On the occasion of the new school year of 2016-2017, President Tran Dai Quang has sent his letter to teachers and students nationwide.
In his letter, the President asked the educational sector to continue the effective implementation of the Party and State’s policy on basically and comprehensively reforming education and training. 
The State leader said the sector needs to focus on developing human resources, especially high-quality personnel, tightening disciplines and paying attention to teaching morality, soft skills, citizen’s conscience and responsibility. 
The sector is asked to invest more in education and training in remote and border areas and islands, as well as for those who made contributions to the country’s revolutionary cause.
President Quang stressed that the sector must improve the quality of comprehensive education to meet socio-economic development requirements and better serve the country’s industrialisation, modernisation and international integration.
He also wished students nationwide to make tireless efforts to attain great achievements in study and scientific research towards a better life and a more prosperous country.
The 2016-2017 academic year is the third year the sector has conducted the government’s action plan on fundamental renovation of the educational system, under which the Ministry has set out nine priority missions for the future.
They include stepping up the vocational direction for students; improving the quality of teaching and learning of foreign languages; and boosting the application of IT to teaching, learning, and education management.
