The sixth Sapa International Mountain Marathon, which took place in Sapa, Lao Cai province from September 21 to 23, attracted more than 3,100 runners from 54 countries, Vietnam News Agency reported.
The event was organized by the Sapa district People’s Committee in coordination with Topas Travel, as part of the 2018 Sapa Autumn Festival. More than 3,100 runners competed in the race with five distances of 100km, 70km, 42km, 21km and 10km.
The runners from 54 countries and territories such as Vietnam, Thailand, France, Singapore, Sweden, the UK and Germany had a chance to experience spectacular and poetic natural scenery in one of the most beautiful mountain regions in Vietnam.
Each route will include challenges such as climbing and going downhill in severe conditions, which require endurance and skills to conquer, according to Vice Chairman of Sapa district People’s Committee, Tran Manh Hao.
After the three-day competition, on September 23, the organizing board presented first, second, third prizes to 36 runners.
Theresa Auton (Australia) and Le Anh Hao (Lao Cai province, Vietnam) finished first in 10-km race while Ban Thi May and Le Van Tuan Anh, also from Lao Cai, won the 15-km race.
Le Thi Lan (Vietnam) and Junwei Ng (Singapore) topped in 21-km race. Sarah Easton (the US) and Andrei Badiu (Romania) triumphed in 42-km race.
The 70-km route was conquered by Ngon Sin Phan (Hong Kong) and Nguyen Sy Hieu (Vietnam). In the 100-km race, Evelyn Lek (Singapore) and Nguyen Tien Hung (Vietnam) grabbed first prizes.
At this year’s event, over US$38,000 will be donated to local projects operated by Operation Smile and Newborns Vietnam to help support health amongst newborn babies.
Founded in 2013, the competition is one of the biggest ultra-marathon events in Asia and a landmark event in Southeast Asia. In the first season, the event only attracted a small group from Vietnam, but in this year’s event they account for over half of the participating runners.
