Over 7 million visitors rush to Hung Kings Temple Festival

The worship of the Hung Kings is instilled in the Vietnamese people. It is inscribed in 2012 on the List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by the UNESCO.

The Hung Kings Temple historical relic site in Vietnam's northern province of Phu Tho welcomed more than seven million visitors during the temple's annual festival from April 5 to 14, or nearly one million visitors per day, Vietnam News Agency  reported.
On the main days of the festival between February 12 and 14 (they eighth and 10th day of March of lunar calendar), four to five millions pilgrims flocked to the temple to show their respects to the nation’s founding fathers.

Sunny whether and fresh temperature are the reasons for the high turnout. Phu Tho province mobilized five thousand personnel to ensure security and safety for the festival.
Many kinds of activities have been taking place during the festival, including palanquin processions, contests to make “Banh Chung” (square glutinous rice cake) and “Banh Day” (white, flat, and round glutinous rice cake) – which were created by the 18th prince of Hung King some 3,000 - 4,000 years ago and symbolyze the “earth” and the “sky”, respectively, and art and cultural programs.
The purpose of this ceremony is to remember and pay tribute to the contributions of the Hung Kings, the traditional founders and first emperors of the nation. Beginning as a local holiday, the ceremony was recognized as a national holiday in 2007.
Earlier, Vietnamese expats across the world organized ceremonies at the weekend to commemorate the death anniversary of the Hung Kings, the legendary founders of Vietnam. Notable events were held in Ukraine, Malaysia, and Switzerland.
In 2018, in three days of the festival, 2.5 million pilgrims went to the Hung Kings Temple to pay tribute to their ancestors and enjoy cultural activities held in the framework of the festival.
