Party chief launches new school year in Hanoi

Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong beat a drum on the occasion of the beginning of the new academic year on September 4 at Hanoi’s Nguyen Gia Thieu high school, which he attended nearly 60 years ago.

In his opening speech, Trong encouraged the school to further improve the quality of teaching and learning, both in academic and moral terms, and in ways that inspire a sense of creativity and self-directed learning amongst the students.

As the capital strives to become more modern over the next five years, the education sector must try to mobilise all the resources available, he urged.

This will require the efforts of all relevant authorities, mass organisations and economic sectors, he added.

Later, he unveiled a plaque in acknowledgement of the high school’s progress and planted a tree on campus.

He also met with alumni and ex-teachers at the school.
