President Sang, Norwegian PM meet on sidelines of UN Summit

Vietnam President Truong Tan Sang and Norway Prime Minister Erna Solberg met on the sidelines of the United Nations Summit in New York on September 25 to discuss matters related to economic cooperation and trade.

At the meeting, Sang urged Solberg to speed up Norway’s ratification of the EU-Vietnam free trade agreement (EVFTA) and early recognition of Vietnam’s market economy status.

The two leaders discussed economic cooperation in preserving and protecting the marine environment, oil and gas, shipbuilding, hydroelectricity, renewable energy and aquaculture.

In addition, they agreed to continue maintaining regular exchange visits, particularly between businesses and municipalities and closely coordinate at multilateral forums in the future.

Sang congratulated Norway on its selection as a Sectorial Dialogue Partner of ASEAN, which he considered a tremendous benefit to the regional forum, and said he wholeheartedly supports Norway’s full dialogue status.

PM Solberg in turn applauded Vietnam’s achievements in fulfilling its Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), given that with these achievements, Vietnam deserves to become a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council.

They also reached consensus on strengthening cooperation in the implementation of sustainable development goals post-2015.

Regarding regional issues, the two sides agreed the East Sea dispute should be settled by peaceful solutions in accordance with international law, including the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), thereby keeping peace, security, maritime safety and freedom in the East Sea.
