During his working trip to the US, on July 17, the Chairman of Hanoi People’s Committee Nguyen Duc Chung and the delegation have visited Utah states on the invitation of the Governor and Leader of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter – day Saints (the Mormons).
Proposal on building center for family annals database and family value conservation
Mr. Gerit Gong, General Authority Seventy of the Church has welcomed the delegation at the airport and accompanying the delegation during its visit in Utah. Upon the arrival, the delegation has visited religious architectures, charity and social welfare centers of the Church in Utah. Famous religious architectures of the Mormons in Utah States are large scale works with unique and interesting designs. Regarded as the attraction for tourists from all over the world, the Mormons boasts the biggest conference center in the world with 21,000 seats and a lot of church built from the donation from its followers.
Followers of Mormons contributes to 64% Utah population and a large part of states such as Colorado, Ihado, Arizona, Nevada, Wyoming, Hawaii, as well as North Europe and other part of the world. The Mormons promote family value and consider it as foundation for society. Follower of the group pursue a heathy lifestyle with no smoking, alcohol drinking, gambling. They value the self development and working hard. Thanks to the donation from followers, the Mormons has a large budget used for charity, humanitarian and social welfare activities in over 100 countries.
The delegation also paid a visit to the Genealogical Society of Utah. The Center was built in 1894 to create a family database on the world. All of these resources were created to help people find their ancestors. In applicaiton of morden technology for recording, the Center comprises of 4,600 local family history centers in 100 countries with 4 billions documents and 5.4 billions name for searching. At present, the Center is working with UNESCO Vietnam and some of the big family to build family trees in Vietnam.
After the visit, the Mormon has a working session with the delegation. At the meeting, after being briefed by Mr. Gerit Gong on the Church’s activities, on behalf of the delegation, Mr. Chairman Nguyen Duc Chung thanked the Church for its invitation to the Utah state. Mr. Chung send his best wishes to the church leader Mr. Thomas S. Monson for the warmly and sincerely welcome.
Mr. Chung affirms the policy of the Vietnam Communist Party and the Government in respecting and protecting the freedom of belief and religion. On this occasion, Mr. Chung has a frankly and sincerely discussion on the Church’s activities, expressing his highly appreciation on the charitiy works organized by the Church in Hanoi and Vietnam to reduce porvety and improve healthcare since 1991. The Chairman also acknowledged the the positivity in religious activities of the Church’s followers in Hanoi, as most of them are charity works such as teaching foreign languages and soft skills, with an aim to serve the public community.
In sharing similarities in promoting moral values in the community, Mr. Chung suggested the Mormons to support Hanoi in particular and Vietnam in general in building center for family annals database. At present, finding ancestors is a growing trends for big family in Vietnam, attracting a lot of attention from the public.
Sharing experience and cooperating in social infrastructure development
On July 18 morning, Chairman Nguyen Duc Chung made an official visit and talks with Governor of Utah, Mr. Gary Herbert at the Town Hall of the State.
At the meeting, the Chairman would like to thank the Governor of Utah for inviting him to visit and warmly welcoming the delegation. On this occasion, Chairman Nguyen Duc Chung congratulated Utah on the 170th anniversary of its "pioneering" day (July 24) and congratulated on the socio-economic achievements that Utah achieved under its leadership of the Governor.
Chairman Nguyen Duc Chung expressed his admiration for the people of Utah who turned an arid desert into a land of prosperity, self-researched and developed their strengths in agriculture, high technology and medical applications, higher education, making Utah the most successful state in escaping the economic crisis in recent years and is currently the state with the highest economic growth rate in the country, planning water for the next 50 to 70 years to cope with the state's aridity. Moreover, its transportation infrastructure is very modern. At the mean time, the Chairman also highly appreciated and shared the similarities between Hanoi and Utah on the importance of education and training, family values, clan traditions, family is considered as social cell, the foundation for sustainable development.
After introducing the overview of Hanoi's socio-economic achievements, the issues facing the city in urbanization such as clean water, environment, health, education and physical development. Chairman Nguyen Duc Chung expressed his wish to Utah to share experiences, support technology transfer, cooperation in education and training, health, exploitation and use of water and agriculture. For his part, Governor Gary Herbert congratulated Hanoi's economic development achievements, expressed his admiration for the city's 1,000-year-old cultural history and appreciated the efforts of the city government in improving the life quality for people such as ensuring social security, providing clean water, improving living environment, and taking care of people's health. He said that Utah and Hanoi have many similarities and common values that can be shared and that is the foundation for the two sides to strengthen cooperation.

The two sides jointly promote bilateral trade and investment on the basis of mutual benefit.
Following his work in Utah, the delegation was visited by Brigham Young University, the largest private university in the United States, founded in 1875 and fully run by the Church of St. George. With the number of over 34,000 students, it is the leading US institution in the fields of law, finance, business and accounting, especially in the field of auditing and finance. Accountants are always ranked first in the United States, which is cheaper than all other universities of similar size and quality, about $10,000 per year for international students and half reduced for local students.
The delegation had a meeting with leaders and exchanges with students including Vietnamese students at the school. At the request of the Chairman, the school leaders will cooperate with the Church to consider providing scholarships for Hanoi students to study here.
