September 8 chosen as annual day to honor Vietnamese language abroad
Activities to celebrate the day of honoring the Vietnamese language will be held throughout the year and will be integrated into festivals and special occasions in the country.
September 8 has been designated as an annual day to honor the Vietnamese language under a decision signed by Deputy Prime Minister Binh Minh approving a project to celebrate the mother tongue in the overseas Vietnamese community from 2023 to 2030.
The project is aimed at raising the overseas community’s awareness of the Vietnamese language while commending individuals and organizations that have made active contributions to preserving and expanding the coverage of the language among the community.

Besides, efforts will be made to improve the efficiency of Vietnamese language teaching and learning abroad and encourage the host government to integrate Vietnamese into educational curricula in Vietnamese-inhabited areas.
Through the project, the Vietnamese studies and research are hoped to be enhanced, contributing to making the language official alongside others in areas where it is appropriate to do so.
The project will be carried out in parallel with the cultural diplomacy strategy until 2030 which was approved by the Prime Minister on November 30, 2021.
Activities to celebrate the day to honor the Vietnamese language will be held throughout the year and integrated into festivals and special occasions of the country.
There will be an annual meeting to mark the day, an annual contest to explore the language, an award of the “Vietnamese language ambassador abroad” title, and art performance in Vietnam or abroad to honor the Vietnamese language through community-recognized activities.
Individuals, organizations, families, and associations with positive contributions to maintaining and disseminating the language among the Vietnamese community abroad will be commended.
Moreover, an online portal for Vietnamese language training for overseas Vietnamese will be launched and run by the Vietnam National University-Hanoi which is tasked with stepping up promotion work at home and abroad in response to Vietnamese Language Day.
