The Government Office on March 27, has just announced the conclusion of Deputy Prime Minister Trinh Dinh Dung in a recent meeting on enlarging the Tan Son Nhat International Airport.
It's announced that the Ministry of Transport (MoT) assigned the Consultant Airport Design and Construction Company (ADCC) to reconsider all the expansion options, based on which to adjust the planning of the airport.
Meanwhile, the MoT will keep pushing the French consultant company ADPi to complete the plan, in line with the Prime Minister’s direction. Hence, the Vietnam largest airport would be free from congestion and overload, aims to fulfils the transportation demand.
Also, the Deputy Prime Minister stated that the expansion plan should be scientific, objective to meet the practical demand. Specifically, the scheme should include measures for coordinating surrounding traffic system, to connect the airport with other infrastructures of lighting, electricity, water supply and drainage of Ho Chi Minh City. Especially, all the incurred and potentially added cost for the plan should be specified, as in the announcement.
In terms of land clearance for the expansion, Ho Chi Minh City authority in coordination with Ministry of Defense (MoD) would define the land areas for revoking; based on which to phase out the process of investment and construction effectively, cited the conclusion of Deputy Prime Minister Trinh Dinh Dung.
Earlier, The Tan Son Nhat’s expansion plan witnesses conflicting proposals from domestic expert group and foreign consultants. ADPi, the French consultancy company hired by Vietnam’s transport ministry suggests to build another terminal to the south by 2025. Meanwhile, expanding Tan Son Nhat to the north along with an additional third runway is more plausible, according to expert group set up by Ho Chi Minh City. Amid the context, the plan is scheduled to be submitted to the government’s standing committee for the final decision this month.
Tan Son Nhat now has two terminals serving 32 million passengers annually, well above its designed capacity of 25 million. It only has two runways that are sometimes closed due to flooding or lightning strikes. The airport also has space for only 57 aircraft at a time. Previously, in July 2017, Aeroports de Paris (ADP), parent company of ADPi, acquired 20 per cent total shares of Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV), and became strategic partner of this corporation.
