The Ministry of Education and Training asked education departments nationwide to take measures stop the teaching of foreign languages at kindergartens.
According to the ministry, even though a few months ago they already required that kindergartens across the country stop foreign language education, several schools, especially in major cities such as Hanoi and HCM City, continue foreign language programmes.
Many of these schools ask parents for extra fees for foreign language training. The ministry says this affects the quality of official programmes.
In addition, several preschools still provide foreign language training despite the lack of standardised training programmes, certification, infrastructure and qualified teaching staff. Educators worry that substandard training may negatively impact the capacity of children to learn foreign languages in the future.
Departments of education and training across the country are now required to strictly monitor the implementation of official programmes at kindergartens and prevent schools from offering extra courses.
Promotion of foreign language teaching programmes not approved by the ministry are also banned.
