“This is the second time Vietnam hosts the ATF after 10 years of its first organization in 2009,” Nguyen Van Tuan, Director-General of Vietnam National Administration of Tourism (VNAT) said at a press conference January 11.
The ATF 2009 official opened at My Dinh National Conference Center in Hanoi January 9. During the forum, an agreement was reached among delegates, who concentrated on facilitating travel across borders, opening ASEAN’s tourism service market, improving tourism quality, promoting tourism skills, ensuring security and promoting a common policy by 2015. A need to promote ASEAN destinations to the Chinese, Japanese, South Korean and Indian markets was also agreed.
Vietnam’s tourism posted a record number of 12.9 million foreign arrivals in 2017, an increase of 29.1% from 2016, according to provisional figures released by the Vietnam National Tourism Administration.
In which, over 9 million visitors in 2017 were sourced from Asia, scoring a remarkable 34.4% increase over 2016. The lion’s share came from China at 4,008,253 visits, up 48.6% on the previous year.
However, Vietnam needs to address the imbalance by promoting heavily in Southeast Asia (ASEAN). Member countries of ASEAN enjoy visa-free travel to Vietnam, which is a positive for last-minute bookers who travel frequently to neighbouring countries for short breaks.
Meanwhile, Hanoi has welcomed 28.8 million arrivals in 2017, up 9% against the previous year. In which, the capital of Vietnam has welcomed 4.9 million foreign arrivals in 2017, an increase of 23% from 2016.
The ATF is the largest-scale event of tourism cooperation among ASEAN nations, heading to establish ASEAN a single tourism destination, develop tourism in a sustainable way and promote exchanges and consolidate peace and prosperity in the region.
The Travel Exchange (TRAVEX) component is a trade-only mart that showcases the world's largest contingent of ASEAN destination products and services, and facilitates selling, buying and promoting the region internationally.
