Traffic accidents take 96 lives during 5 Tet days

Local congestions were seen at several religious spots as Vietnamese people usually go to churches or pagodas in the first days of the New Year to pray for health and good luck.

As many as 96 people died and 110 others were injured in 144 traffic accidents during the first five days of the Lunar New Year festival in Vietnam, Vietnam News Agency reported, citing statistics from the Ministry of Public Security.

In comparison with the comparable period of 2018 Tet, the situation improved in the three indicators. Specially, the number of accidents reduced 28.7% while the figures of deaths and injuries fell 38% and 26%, respectively.

On the second day of 2019 Lunar New Year (February 6), traffic accidents caused 15 deaths, down 44% from the same day last year.

During these days, the traffic police handled over 2,000 violations on roads across the country and imposed fines worth VND990 million (US$42,300), according to the ministry.

Traffic flows in major cities such as Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City have been without obstacles during the first days of the Tet festival, said head of the Bureau of the National Traffic Safety Committee Nguyen Trong Thai.
