Duong Lam ancient village was presented the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Award for Cultural Heritage Conservation at a ceremony in Hanoi on February 18.
The village has meritoriously restored five age-old houses in the locality including Mong Phu Village Gateway, On pagoda, Giang Van Minh worship-house, Nguyen Van Hung and Ha Van Vinh’s ancient houses, according to the panel of international judges.
The overriding criteria on which the panel based their decision was the quality of the preservation process, conservation techniques, and the preservation methods.
"We appreciate the work in the age-old houses in Duong Lam village and are pleased to know that the restoration has a growing influence on the local community”, said Katherine Muller Marin, Chief Representative of the UNESCO Office in Vietnam.
“This is also a good model for conservation efforts of the rural areas of Vietnam in the future” she added.
In addition, UNESCO awarded certificates of merit to 27 individuals, including 15 foreigners, and three organizations for their significant contributions to the project.
So far, five projects in Vietnam have been the recipient of the prestigious UNESCO cultural heritage conservation award.
The event, organized by the Department of Cultural Heritage under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, aims to recognize and promote the contributions of individuals and organizations in the restoration and preservation of valuable heritage in the Asia-Pacific region.
