Vietnam builds temporary pontoon bridge to boost cross-border trade with China

Vietnam`s China-bordering Mong Cai city in northern Quang Ninh province held a groundbreaking ceremony on Thursday to start the construction of a temporary pontoon bridge.

The project across Ka Long River, or Beilun River in Chinese, will be the first pontoon bridge that connects Vietnam's Mong Cai and China's Dongxing cities with a total investment of nearly 160 billion Vietnamese dong (7.17 million U.S. dollars).
The two-lane bridge will be 114 meters long and 12 meters wide with designed load of 60 tons.
After being put into operation, the bridge is expected to boost import-export activities and socio-economic development of Mong Cai and Dongxing.

Together with the current Bac Luan bridge and Bac Luan II bridge that will be operational soon, the pontoon bridge continues to affirm the close friendship and cooperation between two countries and two localities in promoting economic development in border areas, as well as contributes to a stable and peaceful share border.
In September 2016, Vietnam has signed the Vietnam – China Border Trade Agreement with China to ensure an annual growth of 30% in the trade value of goods exported through border gates between Vietnam and China. The agreement will create favorable conditions for Vietnam’s border provinces to restructure their economic and develop trade. The agreement will contribute to the socio-economic development and improvement of living standards of the people in these provinces. This is also an opportunity for Vietnam to boost the export volume through border gates with China to take advantages of this agreement.
It is estimated that the export value through border gates between Vietnam and China from 2011 to 2016 obtained over 100 million USD, accounting the average ratio of 25% of the total bilateral trade value between the two countries.
