Vietnam calls for respect of international laws, sovereignty

Vietnam has voiced concerns over Russia's decision to annex four regions of Ukraine and recommended related sides work together to reach a mutual agreement for international law and national sovereignty.

Related parties must discuss and resolve conflicts through peaceful methods upon international laws, spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Le Thi Thu Hang said on October 6.

"Vietnam is concerned over the developments of the Russia-Ukraine conflict,” Hang said at a press conference regarding Russia’s declaration to annex four oblasts - Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson.

The spokesperson said that related parties must continue their talks and resolve the issues peacefully with respect for international laws and territorial sovereignty.

As an active and responsible member of the global community, Vietnam is willing to assist the sides to improve their talks and seek possible solutions via discussions for the peace and stability of the region and the world, Hang said.

President Vladimir Putin, on October 6, officially decided to annex four regions of Ukraine into Russia and later chaired the annexation ceremony. These regions cover 15% of Ukraine’s total territorial area.

Putin reportedly said the people of the four regions agreed with the annexation. The four areas are controlled by Russia and Russia-backed forces.

The conflict between Russia and Ukraine has lasted nearly eight months since February 24.
