Vietnam gain highest-ever place in FIFA rankings

The highest place that Vietnam gained in global rankings is 84th in September 1998.

The Vietnamese team has accumulated five more points over some A-class football matches in June, thus saw its rank rise to the 96th position in the FIFA (International Federation of Association Football) ranking, which is the highest in the history of the Vietnamese football, the government portal reported.

This result helps Vietnam place itself in the 15th position in Asia and ensure a slot in the second seeding pot in the draw for the qualification of World Cup 2022’s second round. It also opened more opportunities for the team to battle with less powerful rivals in the upcoming tournament, according to VFF.

Previously, Vietnam played two matches at King’s Cup 2019, which took place during FIFA’s international break in June.
Under Korean coach Park Hang-seo’s lead, the Vietnamese men squad won 1-0 against Thailand, drew 1-1 with Curacao in the second 90 minute match before losing in the penalty shootout.
In Southeast Asia, Malaysia has progressed to the 159th position while Thailand was demoted to the 116th due to bad performance in King’s Cup 2019.
Belgium retains its top position in the rankings, followed by France, Brazil and the UK in the second, third and fourth, respectively. Portugal qualified for top 5 in the rankings after winning the Nations League champion to place itself in the fifth position and relegate the Croatia squad to the sixth position.
The draw for qualification round of World Cup 2022 in Asia is slated to take place on July 17 in Qatar.
