Vietnam has another UNESCO Global Geopark

The geopark features 38 attractions on four thematic routes, offering adventurous experiences in northern Vietnam's most captivating landscapes.

THE HANOI TIMES — The northern province of Lang Son has officially joined the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network, becoming the country's 4th global geopark alongside Dong Van Karst Plateau, Non Nuoc Cao Bang, and Dak Nong.

The admission was celebrated in late June at a ceremony hosted by the provincial People's Committee. Jonathan Wallace Baker, UNESCO Representative in Vietnam, presented the certificate and hailed geoparks as exemplary models of sustainable living in harmony with nature.

These landscapes, shaped over millions of years, shed light on Earth's evolution and help us develop responses to global challenges like climate change.

Baker stressed that nature is a shared heritage and the foundation of lasting peace, and that people need to protect it together.

Ngo Le Van, Deputy Foreign Minister, highlighted the designation as a powerful testament to Vietnam’s efforts to preserve and promote tangible and intangible heritage.

He urged local authorities to ensure the geopark's sustainability, protect its geological, cultural, and ecological values, and create livelihoods for local communities.

As part of the action plan for developing UNESCO Global Geoparks from 2025 to 2030, Lang Son aims to develop unique tourism products that integrate geology, culture, history, and cuisine.

The Lang Son Global Geopark spans over 4,842 square kilometers (roughly 58% of the province) and is home to around 627,500 people.
