Vietnam almost secured their berth in the semifinals after beating Laos 1-0 in their Group B match at the Bishan Stadium in Singapore on June 4.
Midfielder Nguyen Thanh Hien scored the only goal in the 65th minute after he took advantage a loose ball fell to his path to fire a long shot into the near post, beating Lao goalkeeper Keodouangdeth Vathana .
It was a well-deserved reward for Vietnam, who completely controlled the match from the beginning with a majority of possession only for Laos’ resilient and concentrated defence to prevent Vietnam from scoring.
With previous wins over Brunei and Malaysia, Vietnam now have nine points to top the group ahead of Thailand on goal difference.
Vietnam will next play Timor-Leste on June 7.
