US and Vietnam deepen defence cooperation in new dialogue

The first US-Vietnam Political, Security and Defence Dialogue was held in Hanoi on August 26, following the elevation of their relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. Co-chaired by Deputy Foreign Minister Ha Kim Ngoc and US Under Secretary of State Bonnie Jenkins, the talks addressed war legacy issues, counter-terrorism, and cyber security, solidifying the new partnership framework.

Vietnamese Consulate in Russia celebrates 79th National Day

On August 26, the Vietnamese Consulate in Russia held a ceremony to celebrate the 79th anniversary of Vietnam's National Day (September 2, 1945 - 2024). Speaking at the event, the Vietnamese Ambassador to Russia, Dang Minh Khoi, stressed the importance of cooperation between the two countries based on their long-standing friendship and the expectation of further progress in the future, especially after President Putin's state visit in June. Deputy Foreign Minister Andrey Rudenko expected the trade and economic cooperation between the two sides to be enhanced by the next high-level visits, especially the upcoming trip of Chairman of the National Assembly Tran Thanh Man.

Japanese province hopes to host Vietnamese consulate

The governor of Japan's Aichi Prefecture, Hideaki Omura, has proposed that Vietnam open a consulate there. He also hopes Vietnamese airlines will increase flights in the province, which is home to 60,000 Vietnamese and 200 businesses. Deputy PM and Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son emphasized the cooperative relationship between Aichi and Vietnamese localities and appreciated the Japanese province's support for Vietnamese workers. 

Vietnam to export 150,000 doses of African swine fever vaccine to the Philippines

Vietnamese vaccine manufacturer AVAC Vietnam Joint Stock Company (AVAC) will export 150,000 doses of African swine fever vaccine to the Philippines on August 29. The Philippine government has now ordered 600,000 doses from the company. AVAC General Director Nguyen Van Diep said the company has supplied about 2.3 million doses to the domestic market and exported 305,000 doses, including 300,000 doses to the Philippines and 5,000 doses to Nigeria.

Hanoi team win medals at International Olympiad in Astronomy and Astrophysics
For the first time, 100% of the Hanoi team won medals at the International Olympiad in Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA). At the 2024 IOAA in Brazil, all five Hanoi students from Hanoi-Amsterdam High School won awards: two silver and three bronze medals. The competition, held from August 17 to 27, attracted nearly 300 students from 53 countries.

Vietnam secures top spot at Asian Shuttlecock Championships

Vietnam secured first place at the 2024 Asian Shuttlecock Championships, winning eight gold and six silver medals from August 21 to 26. This was the second time the competition has been held and Vietnam have now won the title both times. Nearly 240 athletes from 9 countries competed in seven categories.

Spanish player wins inaugural PBA Hanoi Open

Spanish cue player Daniel Sanchez won the 2024 Professional Billiards Association (PBA) Hanoi Open on August 26, defeating South Korea's Eom Sang-pil in the men's final. Sanchez secured the victory in the sixth set to claim the VND1.9 billion (US$79,000) prize. This was the inaugural PBA event in Hanoi, highlighting Vietnam's growing role in the world of billiards.
