Vietnam pledges support for Africa food security

Vietnam is committed to becoming a strategic partner of African countries, assisting them in attaining sustainable agriculture development to ensure food security and support their efforts to combat hunger.

Ambassador Le Huy Hoang made the affirmation at a May 5 working session on Africa’s agriculture and food security within the first ministerial meeting to review the implementation of the Fifth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD-5).

Vietnam has sent more than 400 of its most talented and experienced experts to support agricultural development in African countries, such as Mozambique, Benin and Senegal.

With the assistance, paddy rice productivity in the African countries doubled and even tripled in some cases, from 2 to 5-6 tonnes/ha.

Thanks to these remarkable results, Vietnam is committed to expanding its efforts and working hand-in-hand with Japan in implementing the Yokohama Action Plan 2013-2017 programme.

The first ministerial meeting to review TICAD-5 took place in Yaounde Capital of Cameroon from May 3-5 with the participation of ministers from Japan and 47 African countries and representatives from African Union (AU), United Nations (UN), UN Development Program (UNDP), World Bank (WB), and other international organisations.

Participants agreed to boost cooperation within the TICAD framework and South- South Cooperation to help African countries develop agriculture, eliminate poverty, promote business environment, increase rights for women and youth, and strengthen actions to deal with issues related to peace, security and cooperation in the region.
