Vietnam pockets nearly 5 bln USD from footwear, leather exports in 5 months
Vietnam`s export revenue of leather and footwear products reached nearly 5 billion U.S. dollars in the first five months of 2016, up 6 percent year-on-year, according to the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT) on Thursday.
In May alone, exports of leather and footwear products were valued at 1.15 billion U.S. dollars, a year-on-year decrease of 0.6 percent, Vietnam's state-run news agency VNA quoted the MoIT as saying.
Meanwhile, in May, Vietnam produced some 19.3 million pairs of footwear, bringing the January-May output to 93.8 million pairs, down 2.9 percent compared to the same period of 2015.
In 2016, the sector targeted to earn some 17 billion U.S. dollars from exports of leather, footwear products, of which 13-13.5 billion U.S. dollars are from exports of footwear.
In 2015, Vietnam earned 15 billion U.S. dollars from exporting leather, footwear items, posting an increase of 16 percent year-on-year, according to the Vietnam Leather and Footwear Association (Lefaso). Among the figure, around 12 billion U.S. dollars was from footwear, said Lefaso.
