Vietnam prioritizes climate change measures

Vietnam is one of the countries likely to be hardest hit by climate change, mainly through rising sea levels, said Deputy Prime Minister Pham Binh Minh at the UN Climate Summit in New York on September 23.

Addressing the conference, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh said Vietnam has put a high priority on giving effect to measures to adapt to climate change and devise orientations to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

He expressed concern over the complicated and unexpected developments of climate change which have adversely affected people’s lives and property as well as sustainable development in almost every nation around the globe.

The Deputy PM called on nations to make stronger commitments and efforts to reach a global framework on climate change by 2015 to reduce GHG emissions and keep the average global temperature rise below 2 degrees Celsius.

He also urged developed nations to strengthen the implementation of commitments under the Kyoto Protocol, provide financial support and advanced technologies to help developed nations to respond to climate change.

Deputy PM Minh also revealed that Vietnam is studying implementation of the Preparation of Intended Nationally Determined Contributions (INDCs).

At the conference, leaders devised a number of climate change adaptation initiatives finance, energy, industry, agriculture and forestry, transport and urban development.
