Vietnamese artists to stage classic drama in Singapore

Talented artists from the Vietnam National Drama Theatre will perform Hamlet at Singapore’s Victoria Theatre and Concert Hall on March 25, said Nguyen The Vinh, the theatre director.

Singapore is the first destination in the theatre’s world tour in response to the 2016 World Shakespeare Congress to mark 400 years of popular, artistic and scholarly enthusiasm for Shakespeare’s life and work, Vinh said.
He added that aside from delivering stellar performance at Singapore’s oldest performing arts venue, the artists will work with Vietnamese students studying in the host country on March 26.

While there are a number of versions of Hamlet around the world, this version focuses on the fierce fight against crime.
The theatre began preparing Hamlet in 2015 and premiered a few months ago. Actors will perform in Vietnamese with English subtitles.
Recently, the theatre started setting up two other dramas: “Thay va tro” (Teacher and Students), which will make positive contributions to the education sector; and “Biet doi Bao den” (Black Panther Detachment), which tells the stories of soldiers struggling during war and peace.
In addition, Truyen Kieu (Tale of Kieu) will be transformed into an opera by the theatre this year.
