Vietnamese Gov’t sets up committee on development of 6G network

The committee is tasked with drafting a strategy and necessary legal framework for 6G network development in Vietnam.

The Ministry of Information and Communications has set up a steering committee on research and development of the sixth-generation wireless (6G network).

Vietnam joins a handful of countries in the race for 6G development.

The committee is chaired by Minister of Information and Communications Nguyen Manh Hung and deputy Vice Minister Pham Duc Long, while members of the committee include leaders from major network carriers such as Viettel, VNPT, and Mobifone.

Under the plan, the committee would focus on drafting strategy and a favorable legal environment for the development and production of 6G equipment.

Such an effort is expected to contribute to the development of the 6G network globally, in turn creating opportunities for the production and launch of the network in Vietnam.

The committee is also responsible for monitoring the progress of the 6G networks in advanced countries and giving a forecast on the trend of telecommunication markets in Vietnam and abroad in the time to come.

This would give the committee the basis to propose a pathway for Vietnam to develop, pilot, and later commercialize 6G networks along with supportive policies for Vietnamese companies during this process.

According to experts, the 6G network would transform the internet bringing virtual reality into life. While the speed of 5G may reach 20 gigabits (Gbps) per second, a sixth-generation network may achieve the terabits-per-second speeds.

Countries around the world, including the US, South Korea, China, Japan, and Finland have already joined the race for 6G network development.
