Accordingly, after playing nine standard games, Liem’s result was on par with Xiong at 7.5 points, therefore, the two vied for the championship in a blitz game in which the white side has seven minutes and the black one has five minutes to think the moves. The time is not accumulated after each move and the black wins if the game ends in a tie.
Liem with the black pieces resisted the King attack by his opponent Xiong, took the upper hand after 36 moves and eventually gained a victory.
Thanks to equal scores in the first rank, both Liem and Xiong received US$15,000 in cash prize and the Vietnamese was awarded an additional US$500 for his victory in a tie-break game.
The title helps Liem accumulated his immediate Elo to 2,726, overpassing Chinese grandmaster Wang Hao to rank 29th in the world.
The World Open chess tournament was a nine-game Swiss system tournament, with 227 contestants, including 36 world grandmasters. Liem was the number one seed.
After this tournament, Liem has been invited to compete in the Grand Tour in Romania this November together with No.11 chess master Vladislav Artemiev and Anton Korobov, the winner of the International Mind Sports Festival.
