Vietnamese students won third prize at Intel International Science and Engineering Fair
Vietnamese students won one third prize and one consolation prize at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF) 2018 which was held in Pennsylvania, the US.
Two students Le Tuyet Quynh Anh and Pham Thi Minh Hue from Tran Phu High School for Gifted Students in Hai Phong city have brought glory to Vietnam, when they won the third prize at Intel ISEF 2018 for their research project on the development of bacteriophage treatment which offers a possible alternative to conventional antibiotic treatment for bacterial infection.
Their project named “Novel Bacteriophage Lysin: A Solution for Antibiotic Resistant Staphylococcus aureus Infection in Vietnam” had won the first prize at a national science technology competition for students in the 2017 - 2018 academic year.
Meanwhile, Le Ha Khoa and Nguyen Phuong Nam from Nguyen Hue High School for Gifted Students in Hanoi received a Certificate of Honorable Mention for their study on concentration of urine neurotransmitters of Dopaminergic and Serotonergic system and the relationship to behavioral disorders in patients with online game addiction.
Intel ISEF is a science fair and the largest pre-college scientific research event in the world. Each May, more than 1,500 students from roughly 70 countries and territories compete in the fair for scholarships, tuition grants, internships, scientific field trips and the grand prizes, including one US$75,000 and two US$50,000 college scholarships.
All prizes together amount to over US$4,070,000. Two awards ceremonies are held including: Special Awards Organization Presentation (which now includes the Government Awards Presentations) and the Grand Awards Ceremony.
The International Science and Engineering Fair was founded in 1950 by Science Service (now the Society for Science & the Public) and has been sponsored by the Intel Corporation since 1997. As of 2012, seven ISEF alumni went on to win Nobel Prizes, with successful ISEF veterans including Jack Andraka and inventor Alex Deans.
This year, the contest attracted 1,793 students from 79 countries and territories with 1,401 projects. The Vietnamese delegation brought eight projects to the competition and was one of 43 countries and territories that won prizes.
