Vietnamese travelers favor domestic trips for Tet 2026, Agoda says

A strong rise in domestic travel during the Lunar New Year holiday will range from cool-climate retreats, beach escapes to cultural hubs like Hanoi.

THE HANOI TIMES — As Tet (Vietnamese Lunar New Year)  approaches, travel plans add to the joyful spirit of reunion and celebration among locals, with domestic attractions being the top choices.

Embracing the excitement of the Lunar New Year, digital travel platform Agoda says more Vietnamese travelers are planning trips for Tet 2026 than last year, with domestic destinations emerging as the top choice.

The rise is based on searches made by travelers in Vietnam between October and November 2025 for check-ins from February 14 to 22, 2026.

This trend aligns with Agoda’s 2026 Travel Outlook Report, which found that 50% of Vietnamese respondents plan to travel domestically in 2026.

The nine-day holiday and numerous popular festivals offer a perfect opportunity for families and friends to reconnect, unwind and explore Vietnam’s diverse landscapes without the complexities of international travel.

With Tet less than two months away, preparations for Vietnam’s traditional Lunar New Year are already underway.

According to Agoda, Da Lat in the Central Highlands continues to top the list of domestic destinations for Tet 2026, recording a 44% increase in searches thanks to its cool climate, blooming flowers and festive ambiance.

Phu Quoc Island has climbed to second place with a 41% rise in interest, drawing travelers in search of sunshine, beaches and family-friendly resorts.

The two coastal city of Nha Trang and Danang follow in third and fourth place, celebrated for their coastal charm, vibrant food scenes and wide range of leisure activities.

Meanwhile, the beach city of Vung Tau in southern part of Vietnam ranks the top five with a 31% increase, remaining a favorite short getaway for Ho Chi Minh City residents.

Beyond beach escapes and highland retreats, Hanoi also stands out as an appealing choice for travelers who enjoy immersing themselves in culture and history.

During Tet, the capital comes alive with traditional decorations, bustling flower markets and timeless rituals, offering visitors a chance to experience the heart of Vietnamese heritage through its ancient temples, Old Quarter streets, and seasonal festivities.

Vu Ngoc Lam, Country Director at Agoda Vietnam, said: “Tet is one of the most meaningful times of the year for Vietnamese travelers. With an especially long holiday this year, it offers the perfect moment for families and friends to begin new journeys whether rediscovering the beauty of Vietnam’s destinations or creating lasting memories together.”
