Vietnam’s north central provinces fix Son Tinh storm’s aftermaths
The authorities and people of the north central region of Vietnam, especially Thanh Hoa and Nghe An provinces, are making great efforts to overcome the aftermaths of Son Tinh storm.
Son Tinh storm, the third tropical storm entering the East Sea in 2018, hit the north central region of Vietnam in early morning of July 19, causing some considerable damages.
Son Tinh, which soaked parts of the Philippines on July 17, had reached sustained wind speeds of up to 90km per hour, the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting said in a statement on July 18.
At 4:00a.m of July 19, typhoon Son Tinh weakened to low pressure. The center of the low pressure was at the 19.0 degrees north and 105.2 degrees east, in the mainland of Nghe An and Thanh Hoa, with highest wind speeds of 40-60 kilometers per hour.
Strong wind swept through the mainland in Thai Binh, Nam Dinh, Ninh Binh, Thanh Hoa, Nghe An and Ha Tinh provinces, where disaster risk alert mounted to level three.
On the evening of July 18, a tornado triggered by the storm blew the roofs from 13 houses in Xuan Pho commune, Nghi Xuan district, Ha Tinh province, according to VOV.
Meanwhile, according to a report on July 19 morning by the Central Steering Committee on disaster prevention and control, heavy rains have caused flooding in the coastal provinces from Nam Dinh to Ha Tinh. The storm surged during high tides, it caused high risk of flooding and landslide in coastal areas.
No deaths have been reported so far.
It is forecast that storm circulation continues to cause heavy rainfall from 200-300mm, 350mm in some places, resulting in flooding and landslides, flash floods in mountainous areas.
There has been no information on serious damage and dyke incident due to the impact of Son Tinh storm till July 19 morning. Yet, there appeared a beachside dike in Thai Binh province at five segments, from K7 + 630-K7 + 650; K7 + 680-K7 + 720; K7 + 745-K7 + 770; K7 + 875-K7 + 895; K8 + 100, K8 + 130, with a total length of 135m.
It is forecast that in the coming hours, the tropical low pressure will move in the direction of the west-northwest, with 20km per hour into the mainland and weaken into a low pressure zone. Up to 07p.m of July 19, the central position of the low pressure area will be at about 19.5 degrees of north latitude; 102.5 degrees of east meridian. The strongest wind in the center of the low pressure area will drop below level 6 (below 40km/h).
