Viet Nam and the US reached an agreement on health and medical science cooperation on June 17 in Ha Noi.
Accordingly, the US side will support Viet Nam in building a global health security centre in Viet Nam to deal with emerging epidemics.
Vietnamese Health Minister Nguyen Thi Kim Tien said the US’s selection of Viet Nam for the building of the centre is attributable to Viet Nam’s relatively developing medical system.
On the other hand, Viet Nam was among the countries which succeeded in controlling SARS (in 2003).
Regarding the H5N1 avian influenza, Viet Nam has recorded a lower morality rate than other countries in the region.
Regarding HIV/AIDS prevention in 2005- 2010, the Vietnamese side received nearly US$68 million in cash and over US$25 million in kinds from the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR).
Viet Nam was the only Asian country that has over the past time received the US’s support in HIV/AIDS treatment; therefore, new infections and mortality of HIV have significantly decreased.
