The workshop provided the basis for the report on the social, environmental and economic impacts of an alternative green energy scenario for Vietnam.
Developing clean energy projects while reducing fossil fuel-based plants that pollute the environment is an irreversible trend in the world, including Vietnam, according to the an international workshop held on September 18 in Hanoi.
The workshop, themed “Fostering cooperation to ensure a just energy transition”, was jointly organized by Friedrich Ebert Stiftung Vietnam (FES Vietnam), Vietnam Union of Science and Technology Associations (VUSTA) and the Green Development and Innovation Center (GreenID).
About 100 participants, including representatives from Vietnamese government agencies, research institutions on energy transition, trade unions, economic and social organizations, media outlets, and international organizations attended the workshop.
The workshop aims to discuss issues related to the transition, focusing on the political and social implications of energy transition process. Besides, it provided the basis for the report on the social, environmental and economic impacts of an alternative green energy scenario for Vietnam.
The first draft of the joint study, including issues which have not been published in Vietnam such as the assessments about quantity and quality of employment during the transition, was presented at the workshop.
Yvonne Blos, president of FES Vietnam, said: “Our goal is to conceptualize a just transition in such a more comprehensive way to shape a more sustainable and humane version of tomorrow’s economy. So how can we unite these different approaches to build alliances for a just transition in Asia and beyond? That is one of the key issues we would like to discuss during the conference.”
The workshop provided an opportunity for Vietnamese policy makers to meet and talk with international experts, including those from Germany, United States, China, India, Indonesia, Thailand and so on, to gain insights into what are going on internationally and regionally, with a view to making the energy transition a just and suitable process for Vietnam.
