The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) voted Da Nang as Vietnam’s National green city in 2018.
Speaking at the celebration ceremony, Vice Chairman of the Da Nang People’s Committee Nguyen Ngoc Tuan said, the new title given to Da Nang is the honor and pride of the city’s citizens.
It also facilitates Da Nang authorities to build the city as an “environment city” in the time ahead.
Dr. Van Ngoc Thinh, director of WWF Vietnam, said the competition Earth Hour City Challenge (EHCC) is an initiative aiming to call on worldwide cities to act and head to an environment-friendly globe and at the same time, build and conduct plans to reduce and adapt to climate change.
In 2018, 132 cities of 23 countries worldwide applied for the EHCC. Among those, there were three Vietnam’s cities namely Da Nang, Dong Ha (Quang Tri province), Hoi An (Quang Nam province), all of which passed the qualifying round along with other 37 cities in the world.
As resulted, Da Nang along with other 21 cities came to the final vote of the competition to find out the winner. The Vietnamese city impressed EHCC judges with its comprehensive and ambitious solutions on climate change dealing and reducing. The moves contribute to realizing goals of the Paris Agreement 2015, in which the signatories including Vietnam agreed on the goal of reducing carbon emission by 25% by 2030 over the level in 2016.
To fulfil this goal, Da Nang has conducted numerous clean energy initiatives including using solar panels, biology fuel and focused on traffic projects, etc.
This is the second time Vietnam attends the EHCC. In 2016, Hue gained the National green city award.
