While the social distancing measures adopted by countries to fight the Covid-19 pandemic have shut down yoga studios and other communal spaces, yoga practitioners have turned to home practice and online yoga resources.
With schools closed and summer break activities cancelled, parents may find it challenging to keep their children physically active. Yoga can help. UNICEF says kids can practice many yoga poses without any risk and get the same benefits that adults do.
These benefits include increased flexibility and fitness, mindfulness and relaxation.
Yoga is an ancient physical, mental and spiritual practice that originated in India. The word ‘yoga’ derives from Sanskrit and means to join or to unite, symbolizing the union of body and consciousness.
Today it is practiced in various forms around the world and continues to grow in popularity.
Recognizing its universal appeal, the United Nations proclaimed June 21 as the International Day of Yoga, aiming to raise awareness of benefits by practicing yoga.
In Vietnam, this year’s event will be organized in five provinces of Quang Ninh, Vinh Phuc, Thanh Hoa, Phu Yen, and Ninh Thuan from June 21 to June 28. Thousands of people will participate in the celebrations.
Under the theme “Yoga from Home”, the Indian embassy in Hanoi has been promoting yoga through online mode. Accordingly, Swami Vivekanand Cultural Center has been organizing a series of online yoga-related activities, including webinars on “yoga asanas”.
Notably, a video blogging contest “My Life – My Yoga” has also been launched. Participants from Vietnam performing yoga asanas from their places are required to upload their videos on the embassy’s social media platforms.
The three best videos will receive prizes by the embassy and be considered for the global contest.
