A major step of the project was the removal of the famed “Shark Jaw” building.
Established in 1907, the square took its name from the Dong Kinh Nghia Thuc movement - an influential patriotic education initiative led by prominent Vietnamese scholars.
Following the successful August Revolution in 1945, the square was renamed to honor the movement’s role in awakening national consciousness and nurturing a spirit of intellectual and cultural pride.
In the 1970s and 1980s, the square served as a bustling transportation hub, with tramlines linking central Hanoi to outlying areas such as Ha Dong and Yen Phu. By the 1980s, the tram station had given way to the Bo Ho Department Store- then the largest shopping destination in the capital.
In 1991, construction began on the “Shark Jaw” (Ham Ca Map) building, completed two years later. Its bold architecture became a distinctive silhouette on Hanoi’s skyline. Over time, Dong Kinh Nghia Thuc Square evolved into a vibrant public space, drawing crowds during cultural festivals, weekend events, and New Year’s Eve fireworks.
To blend modern aesthetics with historical reverence, Hanoi authorities plan to reshape the square into a multifunctional cultural space. Central to this is removing the “Shark Jaw” for an open, elegant design harmonizing with Hoan Kiem Lake.
The Hoan Kiem District People’s Committee will continue phase two of the renovation under the city's guidance, aiming to serve residents and tourists seeking a deeper connection with the capital.
Thuy Ta Restaurant, a beloved lakeside dining spot, has also undergone renovation, now offering a more open and inviting atmosphere.
The square’s flooring has been repaved with a gentle slope toward Hoan Kiem Lake, ensuring effective drainage while maintaining a clean, seamless look.
A tranquil scene unfolds at the square on an early autumn morning.
The iconic central fountain, a symbol of the square’s charm, has been preserved in its original form.
Flower beds and decorative barriers now define the space with grace, offering subtle protection for pedestrians.
Traffic patterns around the square have been thoughtfully adjusted to enhance safety and accessibility.
Numerous stone benches have been added, inviting both locals and visitors to pause, rest, and take in the vibrant scenery.
The renovation project has breathed new life into Dong Kinh Nghia Thuc Square.
