Beauty of Hanoi's Cao Duong conical hat village
The making of conical hats help the villagers in Cao Duong commune, Thanh Oai district, Hanoi capital, increases their income and improve their standard of living.
The conical hat (Non la) is a traditional headwear of Vietnamese and is a part of spirit of the Vietnamese nation.
In modern life today, the conical hat is no longer widely used in daily life as before. But it still plays an important meaning to generations of Vietnamese as the recognized symbol the country.
The main material used for creating a conical hat is palm leaf. Making a conical hat is a painstaking process, from choosing leaves, to rubbing in sand, then drying them under the sun; afterwards a ploughshare is used to stretch them flat without breaking them. The circle of the hat is made from the bark of bamboo. Each hat has 16 circles, causing the hat to be firm but supple.
In Cao Duong commune, the old villagers are not the only ones who know how to make conical hats, but the children are involved as well. The children take advantage of the free time after harvest to make hats.
Hats from Cao Duong commune look healthy and they are more durable than products made in other areas.
In the localtity, many generations have made conical hat crafts from the grandfather down to the grandchildren. All members of the family make ‘non’ crafts, and the entire village does the same.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Sinh, a 60-year old farmer in Cao Xa village happily said: "On an average day, I can do from 1-2 hats per day, gaining about 50,000-70,000 VND. The young labourers can reach their higher income."
Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Cao Duong Commune Tran The Anh said about 80% of rural households in the commune currently participate in making conical hats.
He noted that handicraft sector has contributed about 40% of total local revenues.
According to the official, the making of conical hats help the villagers in Cao Duong commune increase their income and improve their standard of living. At present, the average income from the work is 34 million VND per person in a month.
Hats from Cao Duong are now available in every part of the country and exported to China, Japan and European countries.
Along with making a significant contribution to the commune's economy, the work also helps conserve, preserve and promote the value of spiritual culture.
