Boundary expansion gives Hanoi facelift
Changes in Vietnam`s second-largest city over the past ten years may surprise many people.
Vietnam's capital city of Hanoi has undergone remarkable changes over the past ten years since the expansion of its administrative boundaries on August 1, 2008.
The expansion was carried out under the 12th National Assembly’s Resolution 15/2008/QH12. It was a historic event with long-term and comprehensive impacts on Hanoi’s political and socio-economic status.
After the expansion, the capital has maintained a high annual economic growth rate. The annual gross regional domestic product (GRDP) growth averaged 7.4% in the period of 2008-2017, and per capita income in 2017 stood at VND86 million (US$3,910), 2.3 times that in 2008.
Hanoi has successfully mobilized and effectively used resources for its development, especially investment in technical and social infrastructure.
A series of modern and large-scale infrastructure projects have been completed during the period.
Notable examples are Terminal T2 of Noi Bai international airport, elevated belt road No.3, Nhat Tan-Noi Bai highway, extended national road No.5, several new bridges across the Red River and seven flyovers in the city.
Hanoi also focused on building new-style rural areas to gain the target of building a modern capital city. One of the remarkable achievements is the smaller gap in living conditions between urban and rural areas.
In particular, farmers' per capita income has increased 2.92-fold, from VND13 million (US$572) per year in 2008 to VND38 million (US$1,672) per year at the end of 2017.
Moreover, the Law on Capital City, which took effect in early 2013, has provided the city with particular mechanisms, facilitating its management and governance work.
The law has also stipulated important orientations for Hanoi to develop in a rapid, comprehensive and sustainable way.
After merging with the whole neighboring Ha Tay province, Me Linh district of Vinh Phuc province and four communes of Luong Son district, Hoa Binh province, the current Hanoi sprawls over 3,328 square kilometers.
After 10 years, Hanoi has developed quite well the new resources to meet the requirements of long-term and sustainable development. The city's leaders have affirmed that Hanoi is now a unified and strong body, full of vitality.
