Czech companies seek waste management and transport development cooperation with Hanoi

Hanoi's 10 million inhabitants strain the city's facilities for handling and transporting waste.

Czech government agencies and companies are ready to help Hanoi in waste management, water treatment and public transportation, Environment Minister Petr Hladik said on September 12.

Referring to the problems Hanoi faces in these sectors, the Czech minister said he brings companies looking for opportunities in Vietnam, especially those related to environmental protection and energy.

The delegation met with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment to discuss issues related to the implementation of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) and cooperation in combating climate change and eco-friendly tourism.

Nguyen Trong Dong, Vice Chairman of the Hanoi People's Committee, said Hanoi is home to about 10 million people, which gives significant care to traffic.

"In recent years, the capital has made remarkable achievements in socio-economic growth, but this has been accompanied by environmental pollution and traffic congestion in the city," he said.

A huge amount of waste is still buried, he said, adding that the city is now developing two waste treatment plants in Soc Son District and Xuan Son Commune in Son Tay Town.

The two plants will be able to handle up to 7,000 tons of household waste per day, he said.

"By 2030, Hanoi plans to treat 100% of its wastewater," he said. "The city expects to receive strong support from international partners, including those from the Czech Republic, to address these issues," he said.
