Deutschlandfest 2025 opens in Hanoi to mark 50 years of Vietnam-Germany relations

Marking half a century of diplomatic ties, Deutschlandfest 2025 brings a vibrant showcase of German-Vietnamese friendship in the heart of Hanoi.

THE HANOI TIMES — The three-day German Festival - Deutschlandfest 2025  starting on October 17 evening at the Hoan Kiem Lake pedestrian zone aims to celebrate the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Germany.

With the theme “Celebrating Joint Development Cooperation”, the event highlights the strong and growing partnership between the two countries across politics, economy, culture, science and education.

The opening ceremony saw the attendance of Deputy Foreign Minister Le Thi Thu Hang, German Ambassador to Vietnam Helga Margarete Barth, along with representatives from Vietnamese ministries, German organizations, businesses and development agencies.

Speaking at the ceremony, Hang praised Germany’s enduring support for Vietnam, noting that Germany was among the first Western countries to assist Vietnam after reunification and during the Doi Moi economic reform era.

“Germany’s development aid to Vietnam has reached over US$3.5 billion, contributing to poverty reduction, human resource training and sustainable development,” she said, affirming Vietnam’s commitment to strengthening multifaceted cooperation with Germany.

“In Hanoi, a city recognized by UNESCO as a City for Peace, I hope that our two countries will continue to work together to advance international cooperation for peace, stability, security and sustainable development. Together, we can effectively address global challenges such as climate change, food and energy security and pandemics in today’s complex world,” she added.

Ambassador Barth highlighted the broad and deep ties between the two nations, emphasizing collaboration in various fields and the contributions of over 200,000 Vietnamese-origin residents in Germany.

“Deutschlandfest aims to showcase the breadth of the Vietnam-Germany partnership through vibrant, interactive events,” she said.

Around 40 German organizations and businesses, as well as delegations from the states of Bremen, Hessen and Thuringia, are participating in the festival. Visitors can explore themed spaces such as the “Magic Cube” for sustainable development models, the “Career Orientation Bus” offering study and work opportunities in Germany and a range of sports, music and culinary activities.

The festival runs until October 19 stands as a celebration of five decades of friendship and a gateway to deeper cooperation in the years ahead.

Melodies blending German and Vietnamese cultures resonated throughout the festival. 

Vietnamese and German tourists immerse themselves in the festival’s colorful atmosphere.

The Goethe-Institut’s booth at the festival showcases cultural and educational programs.
