Discover Phung Hung street’s frescos
Hanoi’s Phung Hung Street decorated with frescos was made available to the public on February 2 as an artistic welcome to the Lunar New Year, which begins in the middle of this month.
Under the theme “Memories of Hanoi,” the project "Paintings on Phung Hung Street," which was co-ordinated by the People's Committee of Hoan Kiem District, the United Nations Human Settlements Program (UN Habitat), and Korea Foundation were completed by artists from Vietnam and South Korea.
The art works depict the new, modern face of Hanoi while preserving traditional elements. The artists also hope to tighten the friendship between the two countries and promote Hanoi on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of Vietnam as a member of the United Nations and the 25th anniversary of the formal diplomatic ties between Vietnam and South Korea.
Phung Hung Street leads to Dong Xuan, one of the capital’s largest markets, and runs parallel to a railway viaduct that comprises 127 arches of near equal length, which are now livened up by the murals.
Meant to capture the soul of an age-old Hanoi steeped in history and culture, the 17 frescos depict local royal sites and commercial towns. Murals of stationery shops, trams, and vendors shouldering poles with hanging baskets of food, and feudal scholars penning calligraphy evoke poignant memories in residents’ collective imagination.
Tourists and locals flocked to Phung Hung Street to feast their eyes and take photos during the first day of display.
