Fighter jets grace Hanoi skies for the first time
For the first time in history, residents of the capital witnessed a spectacular aerial display as fighter jets and military aircrafts soared over Hanoi during a training session preparing for Vietnam’s National Day on September 2.
THE HANOI TIMES — The skies above Ba Dinh Square came alive on August 24 with the presence of more than 40 military aircraft, showcasing Vietnam’s aerial capabilities in an unprecedented flypast.
The event marked a pivotal moment ahead of the 80th anniversary of Vietnam’s National Day that falls on September 2, known officially as Mission A80.
The fleet included the legendary Su-30MK2 multi-role fighters, Yak-130 advanced jet trainers, L-39NG light attack aircraft, and C-295 transport planes.
Departing from Hanoi's Hoa Lac and Gia Lam airfields, and Bac Ninh Province's Kep airbase, the aircraft flew in precise formations across central Hanoi, drawing the attention of Hanoi citizens on the ground.
The helicopters bearing red flags with yellow star appeared in the skies over Hanoi, capturing the attention of both residents and tourists.
The two-seat advanced jet trainer Yak-130 is co-developed by Russia and Italy, used for combat training and light-attack missions.
Su-30MK2 is the Russian-made, heavy-class fighter jet capable of long-range air superiority, ground assault, maritime strike, and reconnaissance missions. It is capable of both day and night operations in all weather conditions.
Onlookers were able to admire these aircrafts from the streets below.
Helicopters from Regiment 916 flew in tight formation proudly carrying the Vietnamese national flag fly over Cua Bac Church.
The largest tactical transport aircraft C-295 currently in service with the Vietnam Air Force, built by Airbus Military in Spain. It is capable of troop and cargo transport, airdrop missions, and search-and-rescue operations.
A striking moment unfolded as the helicopters with national flags flew in formation over the Bac Son Monument.
