Celebrate Vietnam’s National Day with a coffee trail through Hanoi

This National Day, explore Hanoi’s liveliest cafés, where history, culture, and strong coffee await around every corner.

THE HANOI TIMES As Hanoi prepares to mark the 80th anniversary of Vietnam’s National Day on September 2, the capital transforms into a canvas of red flags, interesting exhibitions, and bustling parades.

The city’s streets come alive with history and national pride, inviting both locals and visitors to join in the festivities. Beyond the grand ceremonies, travelers can discover a more intimate way to experience Hanoi’s patriotic spirit, savoring the rich aroma of Vietnamese coffee at some of the city’s most iconic, history-themed cafés, where décor and ambience celebrate the nation’s heritage.

This year, several local coffee shops have curated unique, themed spaces that pay homage to Vietnam’s road to independence. Here are four must-visit cafés where you can sip your drink and soak in the spirit of National Day.

TheLa Coffee

Tucked away on the tranquil Tran Quang Dieu Street, TheLa Coffee feels like a nostalgic time capsule, echoing the charm of old Hanoi. Beneath fluttering Vietnamese and  Communist Party    flags, the shop’s facade mimics a vintage newspaper cover, infused with a modern twist that resembles a social media post. Its slogans, such as “Nothing is more precious than independence and freedom,” strike a powerful chord.

One of its most charming features is a mock street signpost out front, bearing the names Doc Lap Road and Dien Bien Phu Road, both symbolic of Vietnam’s historic victories. This whimsical detail is a nod to Hanoi’s past and has become a favorite photo spot for visitors.

Inside, rustic wooden furnishings, limewashed walls, and soft sunlight filtering through the garden create a serene atmosphere. The decor, from weathered books and ceramic vases to carefully placed national flags, evokes the quiet strength and pride of an earlier era. A special corner adorned with conical hats and traditional drums glows under the soft trellis light, offering guests a peaceful moment of reflection.

Cheka Cafe

Nestled in Hanoi’s Duong Noi urban area, Cheka Cafe is proudly decked out in red flags and yellow stars, offering a nostalgic and patriotic atmosphere inspired by the historic moment of September 2, 1945.

The café blends history with modern charm, drawing young visitors with themed décor, vintage objects, and a tribute corner honoring national artists like Van Cao, composer of the national anthem Tien Quan Ca. Every detail, from photo booths and documentary displays to National Day-inspired drinks, to echo the theme: “Pride from the Past - Responsibility for the Present.”

According to Bao Ngan, the owner of the coffee shop, Cheka’s décor draws inspiration from the sacred moment on September 2, 1945, when President Ho Chi Minh proclaimed the Declaration of Independence, marking the birth of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam.

“I hope every guest leaves with something meaningful whether it’s a beautiful photo, a quiet moment of reflection, or simply the warm feeling of experiencing the spirit of National Day,” she shared.

RO Coffee

Tucked into the lively Hang Ma Street, RO Coffee celebrates Vietnam’s National Day in style and substance. The red-and-yellow palette of flags and vintage yellow walls set a warm, welcoming tone, while every corner of the café is steeped in thoughtful details that stir the heart.

A striking portrait of Ho Chi Minh graces the wall alongside his iconic quote: “Nothing is more precious than independence and freedom.” Even the tableware mirrors the national colors, ensuring that each sip feels part of the celebration.

The café’s themed drinks are a patriotic highlight. Quoc Khanh (National Day) is rich and indulgent, topped with smooth red cream and a yellow star - a delicious symbol of pride. Hoa Binh (Peace) is a bright mango drink, as refreshing as an autumn morning. Am No (Comfort), a sweet lychee and jelly beverage, represents modern Vietnam’s growing prosperity. Each drink tells a story, eagerly savored by guests in every sip

ka:mon kafe

Near Thuy Khue Street, ka:mon kafe feels like stepping onto a historic film set. This hidden gem brings the legendary atmosphere of Ba Dinh Square on September 2, 1945, to life through immersive design and engaging photo spots.

Inside, themed corners include a giant yellow-star red flag backdrop, a replica door adorned with a map of Vietnam, and even a wall dedicated to Ho Chi Minh reading the Declaration of Independence.

Guests are welcome to don red conical hats and wave handheld flags, all provided for free. Whether you're a history buff or just love a unique check-in spot, ka:mon kafe offers a one-of-a-kind experience.

The Soul Coffee & Cake

Situated on peaceful Yen Phu Street near West Lake, The Soul Coffee & Cake blends patriotic flair with a cozy, modern vibe. From its hanging vintage newspapers and embroidered red banners to a bold sign proclaiming Independence - Freedom - Happiness, every detail honors the legacy of Vietnam’s founding.

The décor features a red conical hat and a display of historical documents and photos recreating the spirited air of that monumental day in 1945.

But it doesn’t stop there. The café’s menu is a creative tribute to the occasion: drinks are topped with edible maps of Vietnam, yellow stars, or the word Doc Lap (Independence). Red-and-yellow themed pastries round out the celebration, offering a delicious way to experience history.
