General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong leaves profound personal legacy

His nearly three terms as General Secretary have been marked by significant achievements, including economic growth, social stability, and accomplishments in foreign relations.

Former Secretary of the Hanoi Party Committee Pham Quang Nghi shared his thoughts with The Hanoi Times on the profound personal legacy left by General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, describing him as a leader who lived his life for the nation and its people.

General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong has maintained a simple, calm, and humble demeanor throughout his leadership. He is seen as a model of ethical integrity. What are your thoughts on his leadership?

For any leader, two major criteria for evaluation are virtue and competence. In the case of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, his competence is evident from the many roles and responsibilities entrusted to him by the Party and the people.

General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong's virtue is plain for both ordinary people to see as well as for those who have worked closely with him. His ethical conduct is demonstrated in both his professional and personal life. Throughout his career—whether as   Party Secretary in Hanoi, National Assembly Chairman, or General Secretary—he exemplified integrity, humility, and dedication, working tirelessly without rest. His unpretentious lifestyle, from his clothes to his well-worn briefcase, reflects his commitment to simplicity and approachability, making his exemplary character clear and undeniable.

Not only me, his long-time professional acquaintance, but also others feel this way. Meeting General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong evokes not just the impression of a high-ranking leader, but also a feeling of warmth, friendliness, and sincerity. This feeling emanates from his natural and consistent demeanor, which is rooted in his genuine character.

The legacy of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong is evident in the country's unprecedented growth and prestige. What key aspects of his contributions stand out for you?

General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong has made profound contributions across various domains—economy, culture, social affairs, foreign relations, and national defense. His nearly three terms as General Secretary have been marked by significant achievements, including economic growth, social stability, and accomplishments in foreign relations. His leadership has ensured Vietnam's independence and earned international respect while adeptly managing complex international relations.

Notably, his focus on party-building and combating corruption has been particularly powerful. His strong, decisive action and commitment to maintaining the Party’s integrity reflect his deep understanding of the importance of these efforts, despite the challenges and sacrifices involved.

General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong's significant contributions to party-building and anti-corruption are well-recognized. Given the challenges, what are your views on the future effectiveness of the anti-corruption efforts?

The passing of any leader is a great loss to the Party, the organization, and the people. However, it is essential to understand that the passing of leaders is a natural part of life, one that cannot be avoided. At the same time, the work of any individual or organization, including a Party, continues through succession. I firmly believe that our Party will choose a worthy successor for the position of General Secretary. The tasks of party-building and combating corruption must continue.

As a revolutionary organization with over 94 years of experience and trials, our Party is well-prepared to continue its mission. The Central Committee and our cadre of loyal and creative members embody a tradition of unity and collective decision-making. Whoever assumes the role of General Secretary will need to continue these vital efforts. The decision to continue or halt these efforts is not up to any individual leader but reflects the collective will of the Party and the aspirations of the people.

Every day, every official and Party member, especially those in key positions, faces challenges and temptations related to personal interests, power, and responsibilities. The higher the position, the greater the responsibility and expectations. In this context, the heartfelt admonitions of  General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong are particularly poignant: “Human honor is the most sacred and noble thing.” Maintaining personal and Party reputation is therefore a primary expectation of officials and the people.

Over the years, in various roles at the central level, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong has consistently shown deep affection and provided profound guidance for the immediate and long-term development of Hanoi. How do you perceive his commitment and contributions to the city?

General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong was born and raised in Hanoi, where he spent most of his career. His contributions and impact were particularly notable during his time as Deputy Secretary and later as Secretary of the Hanoi Party Committee, especially during the period of national and capital reform, openness, and integration. His leadership helped ensure that Hanoi maintained its role as the heart of the nation—its political, administrative, cultural, economic, scientific, educational, and international exchange center.

General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong is extremely knowledgeable about Hanoi's position, role, and responsibilities, as well as its rich thousand-year-old cultural heritage. His subsequent directives and guidance for the city in his central government roles were shaped by this expertise. His commitment to cultural development and the cultivation of Hanoi's identity is both thoughtful and comprehensive.

As a leader and a cultural figure, he values and preserves national traditions and is passionate about literature, especially Nguyen Du’s Truyen Kieu. He often draws on folk sayings and proverbs to impart wisdom and moral lessons, such as: “The higher you are, the more you must be upright so that those below will not be disorderly,” or he quotes verses from poetry to illustrate revolutionary virtues, such as To Huu’s verses on moral integrity.

What sets him apart is his consistency between words and deeds, making him a powerful cultural role model. He consistently emphasizes that Hanoi, as the capital, must strive to preserve and enhance its distinguished, refined, and heroic heritage, reinforcing its status as the leading city and cultural center of the nation.

Thank you for your time!
