GEOSEA XV discusses latest achievements in geological and mineral management

With the diversification of geology, mineral resources and renewable energy sources, Vietnam is ready to be the place for organizations, nations and scientists to carry out research projects in geology, resources and energy.

Scientists and managers from numerous nations gathered at the fifteenth congress on geology, mineral and energy resources of Southeast Asia (GEOSEA XV) in Hanoi on October 17 to discuss the latest achievements in technology and management in the field of geology, minerals and energy, towards sustainable development .

The Vietnamese Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MONRE) hosted the GEOSEA XV with the theme of "Southeast Asian geosciences and the Earth’s energy toward sustainable development".

This is a pressing issue all over the world when climate change is more and more complex, sea level is rising and geological hazards threaten people’s such as earthquake disaster, tsunami, etc.

The congress attracted the participation of scientists and managers from 21 countries and territories, ASEAN member nations and countries with developed geology
such as the US, the UK, Germany, Russia, Japan, Denmark, Canada, and China.

Addressing the congress, Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Tran Hong Ha affirmed: "Along with the Industrial Revolution 4.0, it is time for us to set up a network with close links between geological and mineral scientists around the world, so that we can exchange experiences and latest achievements in science, technology and management in the field of geology, minerals and energy. Then, we push towards the sustainable development of the countries, together create a large database of the Earth to share with the next generations.”

The minister said that with the diversification of geology, mineral resources and renewable energy sources, Vietnam is ready to be the place for organizations, nations and scientists to carry out research projects in geology, resources and energy.

Besides, Vietnam’s research on geology, mineral resources and energy started in the 19th century. So far, Vietnam has gained numerous basic achievements in scientific research and is continuing to expand international cooperation in scientific research on the Earth and minerals and seek new energy sources, Ha stressed.

In the framework of GEOSEA XV, Minister Tran Hong Ha expects that Vietnamese scientists will focus on many other related issues on geological science in investigating, exploring, evaluating, exploiting and processing the Earth's resources.

Chairman of the Geological Society of the Philippines Ciceron Angeles said that the congress created an opportunity for geologists from ASEAN nations and neighbouring countries such as Japan, China and South Korea to exchange experience and broaden cooperation.

Prof. R.M Reddy from India’s Kakatigu University noted that Vietnam, with its geological diversity and rich mineral resources and renewable energy, is always a top choice for international research projects in the fields of geology, natural resources and energy.

He
said Vietnam and India are expanding international cooperation in scientific research on the Earth, minerals and new sources of energy, adding that the two countries will conduct more activities in mining, especially in oil and gas and coal exploration.

The inaugural GEOSEA was held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in 1972, with four founding members, namely the Geological Society of Malaysia, the Indonesian Geology Association, the Geological Society of the Philippines. Vietnam joined the GEOSEA in 1978.
