Hanoi enchanted by Bombax ceiba flowering season

Every April, Hanoi is bathed in the vibrant colors of Hoa gao or Bombax Ceiba, a stunning symbol of the late spring and early summer season.

THE HANOI TIMES Hoa gao or Bombax ceiba graces the city with its fiery red blossoms. Each season in Hanoi has its own unique charm, with the streets adorned with an array of blooming flowers. But it is perhaps hoa gao, with its striking red hue, that truly captures the spirit of Hanoi's seasonal transition. As the temperature warms, these vibrant flowers begin to bloom, and the city comes alive with their presence.

Hoa gao can be found in villages throughout northern Vietnam, including those around Hanoi. The blossoms set against ancient temples, communal houses, and serene riverbanks have inspired poets, artists, and songwriters. Woven into the cultural fabric of the region, they embody the essence of rural beauty.

One of the best places to experience the full splendor of hoa gao is at the historic Thay Pagoda, nestled in the peaceful Quoc Oai District, outside Hanoi. Photos: Duy Khanh/The Hanoi Times

Set against the backdrop of Sai Son Mountain, the pagoda becomes even more magical at this time of year when the flowers bloom brilliantly, transforming the surroundings into a living masterpiece.

The sight of these fiery blossoms creates a spectacular fusion of nature and history, making it a must-see for anyone exploring Hanoi.

These flowers resemble hundreds of miniature torches, lighting up the countryside and adding a dramatic touch to the landscape.

In April, as the weather warms, the Bombax ceiba trees stand tall, leafless, their branches aglow with fiery red flowers.

Hoa gao goes by many names: Malabar Silk Cotton Tree, Red Silk Cotton, and Kapok, among others, usually blooms in March and April each year.

The flowers win people's heart with their striking color and wonderful appearance.

At iconic landmarks such as the Vietnam National History Museum, the contrast between the ancient tiled roof and the bright red petals of hoa gao provides a stunning visual experience.

During the hoa gao season, Hanoi not only showcases its rich cultural heritage, but also celebrates the splendor of nature at its finest.

For those who visit Hanoi at this enchanting time, the sight of the Bombax ceiba in full bloom is an unforgettable memory.
