Chairman of the Hanoi People’s Committee Tran Sy Thanh stressed the view during a meeting with the UK’s newly appointed Ambassador to Vietnam Iain Frew, today [September 20].
At the meeting, Thanh welcomed the ambassador to Hanoi and wished him a successful working tenure, further contributing to bilateral relations.
On this occasion, Thanh also offered his condolences on the passing of Queen Elizabeth II.
The city’s mayor said over the years, Vietnam-UK relations have been going strong in various fields, especially in economy, culture, and education, in which significant progress in cultural and educational cooperation has further increased the number of Vietnamese students in the UK.
Referring to Hanoi’s planning until 2030, Thanh expected the UK and other international partners would share their experience in urban transport development, a priority field for Hanoi to pursue sustainable development.
For his part, the UK Ambassador expected the two sides to promote cooperation in traditional fields, namely trade and education, for sustainable bilateral relations while exploring opportunities in energy transition, climate change, and security.
In particular, Iain Frew noted that the UK wants to deepen cooperation with Vietnam in education and called for support from Hanoi’s authorities.
He suggested the UK could promote investment in the process of transport and urban planning in Hanoi to better cope with the rapid urbanization in the city.
Hanoi’s mayor Tran Sy Thanh stressed that the city is committed to creating favorable conditions for UK investors, promoting cultural exchange, and strengthening economic cooperation, eventually taking the bilateral ties to a new height.
